The Netherlands Euro 2024 squad kicked off their campaign in Germany with a morale-boosting win as they came from a goal down to beat Poland 2-1 on Saturday.
The Dutch are one of the perennial favourites for international tournaments and Euro 2024 is no different, with some of the biggest stars in Europe at their fingertips. Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake and Matthijs De Ligt make up an experienced defence, with full-backs Lutsharel Geertruida, Jeremie Frimpong, Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries all having excellent seasons at their respective clubs. The defence is on lock – even if the three goalkeepers of Bart Verbruggen, Justin Bijlow and Mark Flekken have just 21 caps between them.
Further forward, Brian Brobbey and Xavi Simons are exciting talents but as has been the case since Robben and Van Persie left the set-up, the Dutch lack firepower. Do they have enough to overcome France, Austria and Poland in their group?
The Dutch will have to go without two stars this summer, though, with Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners both missing out through injury. Both midfielders had initially been announced as part of the final 26-man squad, but injuries suffered in training (De Jong) and a friendly against Iceland (Koopmeiners) means they're unable to play in Germany. Ian Maatsen was called up as De Jong's replacement, despite having previously been omitted after the preliminary team, while Koeman hasn't found Koopmeiners' replacement yet.
Regardless, this is a group looking to get back on track. It's been a long, long time since the Dutch tasted glory at this level, with their only silverware coming back in 1988 in this competition – and in the last decade or so, they've severely underwhelmed. Consecutive failures to qualify for tournaments in 2016 and 2018 means that this will be captain Van Dijk's first taste of representing the Oranje at a summer tournament. Victory might be a little premature for a blossoming group – but they're hoping for a big showing, nonetheless.
As with every Euro 2024 squad involved in the tournament, FourFourTwo will bring you all the latest on the Netherlands as we report live from the European Championship, as well as details on how to watch all the games and fixtures awaiting each nation.

Netherlands manager: Ronald Koeman
Having departed his Dutch post four years ago, before the delayed Euro 2020, for an unhappy spell. at Barcelona, Ronald Koeman is finally fulfilling his wish to coach at a major international tournament. He has tended to give opportunities to youngsters, including Gavi and Pedri at Barça, so could take this team far-but maybe not this year.
The Netherlands' star player
Virgil van Dijk
Reports of Virgil van Dijk's demise, following the cruciate ligament knee injury that cruelly denied the Liverpool and Netherlands skipper a crack at Euro 2020, have been greatly exaggerated. Aside from the resurgent 32-year-old's myriad defensive and leadership qualities, he continues to chip in with some big goals for both club and country.
