WoW: Dragonflight Talents Revamp: Everything You Should Know (2024)

World of Warcraft has finally released more information regarding specific changes coming during the Dragonflight expansion, including long-awaited and much needed changes to the current Talent system. For years, fans have either loved or hated the simplicity that came with WoW's current Talent mechanics, which featured fewer options than previous iterations, though each option had a bigger impact overall. Many felt that this was a limiting factor for build diversity, making every character more inclined to take one specific Talent path, unlike how the game used to be in classic expansions like Wrath of the Lich King. These changes should mix up the current Talent metas, and completely overhaul the simplistic system players have known for years.

Talents in World of Warcraft have always been an integral part to character builds, and creating a unique play-style that caters to each player's liking. As a character gains levels, they gain Talent Points which they are able to spend to unlock various new Abilities and Passive Effects, which then unlock more Talent options. For years, this has been limited to three options per tier, and only giving a player a new Talent Point every handful of levels. In previous World of Warcraft expansions, including the base game, these Talent trees would include many unique passive abilities that can be leveled with Talent Points that are gained every level. These alterations are just one aspect to the new content in WoW: Dragonflight.

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight has recently announced that the Talent system will be returning to the Talent trees, rather than the Three-Choice system players have gotten used to. However, there are major changes coming to this system, showcasing two separate Talent Points - Class Points, which are used on a general tree for the player's class, and Specialization Points, which are used on a specific tree for Class Specialization. While this doesn't allow the cross-over between specializations we have seen before, it still opens up many new options, and unique character builds for each character.

How New Talent Trees Work In World Of Warcraft: Dragonflight

The new Talent tree will also feature easy distinction between Passive Abilities, which are Round, Active Abilities, which are Squares, as well as Octagonal Abilities, which give players a choice between some options. Starting at level 10 - WoW: Dragonflight makes leveling alts easier - Talent Points are acquired every level in an alternating pattern. This means at Level 10 a Class Point will be given, at 11 a Specialization Point will be given, and so on all the way to the level cap of 70, where players will have 31 Class Points and 30 Specialization Points. Not much has changed when spending these Talent Points, with lower levels of the tree unlocking when higher options are completed.

Overall, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight has seemed to move many of its spells and abilities to the new Talent trees, meaning that fewer abilities will be given to the players when leveling up. That means players will have a huge level of freedom when building their character, something that has not been in WoW for a very long time, since the days of WoW's Cataclysm expansion and story. Also, new to Dragonflight are saved Loadouts which will allow characters to conveniently switch between builds, a much-needed quality of life adjustment that many fans have been wanting for a long time.

All the adjustments made to the Talent system in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight so far have seemed to be major improvements. The increased complexity as well as the quality of life improvements might bring back many old fans disenfranchised with the direction of previous expansions. Fans can expect these changes to come during World of Warcraft: Dragonflight's pre-patch, which still does not have a definitive release date at the time of writing.
