Ether was originally assumed because the scientists did understand how sound could travel through a medium. And they had successful figured out that light and other radiations existed. But they wrongly assumed that electromagnetic waves required a medium. We now know better for about a century.

Consciousness is Ether because they both have the qualities which are clear, subtle, light, expansive, and omnipresent. The 5 elements are the different manifestations of Awareness/Consciousness.

Each is derived from a different source. One is the traditional electricity we use daily, let's call that ether. The other comes from the electromagnetic fields that surround us and everything in the universe, we'll call that Aether. Both words have Greek etymology.
In the 21st century, ether is rarely used. The use of flammable ether was displaced by nonflammable fluorinated hydrocarbon anesthetics. Halothane was the first such anesthetic developed and other currently used inhaled anesthetics, such as isoflurane, desflurane, and sevoflurane, are halogenated ethers.

The Afterlife
The Ether is where the deceased's souls normally move on to. Psychopomps guide the dead souls of all kinds ready to move on. This is said to keep the world spinning, through the energy and imagination of the souls.

Is ether a dark matter?
Dark matter and Aether are not related at all. 1) Dark matter can be detected gravitationally. The reason it is currently expected to exist is because introducing dark matter helps astronomical observations. 2) No serious scientist currently believes in the aether.

It has the qualities of absolute lightness. It is cold and still, there is no movement. It is the Element of the spaces within the body. A person with a high proportion of Ether is considered “ethereal,” that is very subtle and spiritual.
